Actresses/Models/Celebs

Top 10 (Hot) Celebrities (actresses, models, etc)

The following are my ten favorite female actors/models. These are girls that are so good looking they alone can get me into a theater seat to see a movie. Even if the movie is bad at least I have something to look at when one of these girls is on screen. This was one of the toughest lists to narrow down as there are so many attractive female celebrities. I formulated the list several times and jumbled around the order several times as well before making my final decisions. Here they are.

Number 10 - Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Number ten on my list of drool worthy celebrities is Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Most people know this girl as the actress who played legendary cop John McClane's daughter in the fourth Die Hard film (Live Free or Die Hard) but she also played a villain in the super-hero flick Sky High and played the lovely love interest Ramona in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Number 9 - Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett has appeared on this site before due to her recent appearance as sexy SHIELD agent Natasha Romanova. Not only is she physically flawless but her voice has a slightly raspy quality that is enough to drive any man (or at least me) a bit crazy. I look forward to seeing her beat some more baddies in future installments of Iron Man and I beg them to bring back that blue suit she wears in the movie...

Number 8 - Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde is probably best known for playing Doctor Hadley on the hit Fox show HOUSE MD but her career has taken off in recent times including two geeky films I plan on seeing TRON Legacy and, the even more awesome Cowboys and Aliens. Interestingly enough Wilde isn't the name she was born with, she borrowed it from Oscar Wilde. Her face is fairly unique, I don’t know of any actresses that look like her and her eyes are very very sexy. Considering the fact that at age 18 she eloped with the son of an Italian Prince the name Wilde certainly fits.

Number 7 - Emma Stone

For those who don't know I love zombies and I love those who involve themselves with zombies which, in 2009, Emma Stone did by appearing in Zombieland. Again an incredibly hot woman is complimented by an incredibly hot voice and her tendency to play girls with attitude, rather than the bland ordinary sort, makes her even more attractive. Emma Stone is a stone cold fox, although that figure of speech really has no place on the internets. It was recently announced that she would be joining the cast of the new Spider-Man reboot meaning there's hope for the future for all nerd kind hoping to catch a glimpse of this beauty.

Number 6 - Lily Cole

You've probably never even heard of Lily Cole. I know that I certainly hadn't heard of her until a few months ago when I decided to take a chance on Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Needless to say I was taken aback by her and wondered why exactly I’d never heard of her before. She’s one of the most unique looking actresses/models out there today and that certainly helps add to her allure. She, unfortunately, hasn’t done all that much acting but hopefully that will change.

Number 5 - Natalie Portman

Natalie cut her teeth in the controversial film The Professional where she plays a young girl who attempts to learn how to be an assassin. Just five years later and no longer a little girl Natalie was cast in Episode One of the new Star Wars Trilogy that George Lucas was working on. Needless to say the film is a little more than disappointing and every performance is pretty bad but at least Portman looks really really hot in the movie. In fact she's looked hot in every movie I've seen her in, from V for Vendetta to Mr. Magorium. She's another girl who has a really great smile, oh and she had a really great video with Andy Samberg (let me see if I can't find a link).

Number 4 - Zooey Deschanel

I'm not entirely sure how to say her last name, I'm also not sure why there is an extra O but Zooey Deschanel is very hot. Maybe its the blue eyes or the fact she usually plays a shy girl but Zooey is intensely beautiful. Believe it or not if it wasn't for Zooey I wouldn't be alive today, for surely I would have killed myself while attempting to sit through The Happening if it hadn't been for her beauty. So thank you Zooey, thank you for saving my life. Now if only you're beauty would also inspire M. Night Shyamalan to NEVER EVER make movies again.

Number 3 - Summer Glau

As a Geek I have a lot of reason to thank Joss Whedon. From the list of badass heroines some of you recall the inclusion of River Tam, who was played by Summer Glau. Summer is insanely hot, there’s something about her. In Serenity she reminded me of a hotter Sigourney Weaver, much much hotter and I do have quite a soft spot for Sigourney both as an actress and as being pretty hot in her earlier films (Hell who am I kidding she looks good in Avatar too). Summer is trained as a dancer and has a tendency, like many women on this list, to take roles that a nerd such as I would like. In Firefly she’s a badass girl who can both brawl and apparently read minds. She also played a super-sexy female Terminator in Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. While the show wasn’t that great I did manage to sit through the first season thanks in no small part to Summer’s epic hotness.

Number 2 - Zoe Saldana

Allow me to put my tongue back into my mouth for long enough to finish this list. Zoe is an up and coming star who, like others on the list, is in nerd stuff. Star Trek was the first film I saw her in and the movie made me simultaneously hate and envy Spock, partially because Spock had Winona Ryder for a Mom (how’s that for an Oedipal complex) and partially because Zoe Saldana was his love interest. Next I saw her in Avatar, where despite being a big blue alien her beauty shines through, I wouldn’t mind crossing species lines to get me some of that. These top 3 were tough to pick and at times Zoe was at the top of the list, at other times Summer but one name kept returning to haunt me.

Number 1 - Miranda Kerr

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put her on the list at all at first. After all she recently married Orlando Bloom arguably the worst actor in the world, rivaled only by Eric Bana (they’ll be a list on that later). She also managed to get pregnant with his baby. Hopefully Miranda’s genes will win out and we’ll get an attractive baby who can become a model as opposed to a horrible wooden actor. It doesn’t really matter in the end because Miranda Kerr is the single hottest woman I have ever seen, PERIOD.

So that’s my list everyone. Here are the women who didn’t make the list:

Kate Beckinsale
Olivia Munn
Keira Knightley
Mila Kunis
Gemma Ward
Christina Ricci
Rose McGowan
Morena Baccarin
Michelle Rodriguez
Jewel Staite

I’m probably going to take a recess on this blog until after the New Year, so I’ll see you all in 2011!

Badass Heroes

Top 10 Badass Heroes

The following are my Top 10 badass heroes. Taken from movies, video games and other forms of media these represent the creme de la creme. These are heroes that range from everyman badasses placed in incredible circumstances to those with special powers or abilities that make them infinitely more awesome. You may feel free to agree or disagree but these are the best and brightest ass kicking heroes in my opinion.

Number 10 - Blade

Blade is what is known as a Dhampir, more or less a half-vampire, this allows him to walk around in the day time earning him the nickname Day Walker. This also means he is immune to most of the weaknesses that commonly plague vampires. Due to the fact his Mother was killed by a vampire during childbirth he has a huge vendetta against them and spends his time cutting them to shreds with various bladed weapons (his name is Blade after all). He emerged in the 1970s as one of the earlier African American superheroes and a trilogy of films about the super-hero have been made, starting in 1998 with BLADE which starred Wesley Snipes, help solidify the hero even more.

Number 9 - Indiana Jones

Based on the heroes of old serials from the 1930s Indiana Jones is an archeologist by occupation. Most archeologists don't regularly get into fist fights over artifacts or end up shooting Nazis but Indiana Jones is just that kind of guy. One of the things that kept the character compelling, at least for me, is the frequency at which he gets his ass kicked, he spends much of the movie in various types of peril and ends up bleeding and bruised by the end of the ordeal. This everyman attribute makes for a far more interesting movie - there's nothing immortal about Doctor Jones. Together with allies like Marcus Brody he recovers ancient artifacts with sacred or religious significance and despite being a dyed in the wool skeptic he usually comes face to face with some pretty crazy shit.

Number 8 - Hellboy

Hellboy is a demonic comic book character created by Mike Mignola for Dark Horse Comics. A baby demon who is stranded on Earth during a Nazi experiment into teleportation he is found by several Allied soldiers and raised by paranormal expert named Professor "Broom" Bruttenholm. In the end Hellboy becomes a good guy, he shaves off his demonic horns, takes a liking to pet cats and spends his days fighting monsters in the employ of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. The character really came to life on the big screen thanks to a classic dead-pan everyman performance from actor Ron Perlman. You might think Hellboy has it easy but he gets the crap beat out of him in both Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army - not that he can't hold his own in a fight.

Number 7 - Gordon Freeman

Doctor Freeman is the protagonist in the first person shooter game Half-Life. It truly is amazing how badass a silent character it can be but perhaps its his ability to be badass without corny one-liners that does it. Not only must he shoot aliens, blow up helicopter gunships and hold his own against massive towering Striders but he also has to solve puzzles and think. A 27 year old physicist carrying the fate of the human race on his shoulders while bonking zombie heads with a crowbar, the only thing that could make him more badass is if he finally capitalizes on all that alone time with Alyx.

Number 6 - Drizzt Do'Urden

Drizzt is a Dark Elf featured in author RA Salvatore's books. The Dark Elves live deep underground and only come out to raid the surface Elves at night. Drizzt steps away from his heritage and makes his own path forsaking the ways of his race to live on the surface and be a hero. He wields dual scimitars and is all but unbeatable in a one on one confrontation. Its hard to describe just how badass he is if you haven't read the books. Just go out and buy the Dark Elf Trilogy and Icewindale Trilogy.

Number 5 - John McClane

Hopefully you've seen Die Hard, in fact hopefully you've seen all four Die Hard films. If you haven't than you won't be familiar with this guy. A New York police officer John McClane ends up in the wrong place at the right time an awful lot. He's thwarted terrorists, thieves and all sorts of henchmen and he gets bloodied and beat up in the process. Bruce Willis is one of the most unassuming action stars, he isn't overly tall and he isn't a muscular beast but he's believable as he outsmarts, outguns and outfights the bad guys in each installment. Hopefully he's not too old and we'll get one more adventure before Willis throws in the towel on the character.

Number 4 - Duke Nukem

Duke Nukem is a foul mouthed narcissistic hero who must fight off an alien invasion. His voice is a parody of Clint Eastwood while his manner and lines are variously grafted from films like They Live and Army of Darkness. He is an amalgamation of all of the over-the-top hero stereotypes perpetuated in the 80s and 90s. The character himself, at least on the cover of Duke Nukem 3D, bears a resemblance to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Duke Nukem is one of the funniest and most badass heroes in history.

Number 3 - The Terminator

Originally a villain the Terminator is a machine designed for one purpose, killing things. In the second film, however, the Terminator is sent in to protect John Connor instead of killing him. It must protect John from an even more advanced Terminator known as the T-1000. Arnold Schwarzenegger offers one of the best performances of his storied action hero career as the T-800 Terminator. He is subtly funny when he needs to be and the robotic way in which he delivers some of the movies great lines is classic. He is a cold cool killer yet by the end of the film he's learned a lot more about emotions and what it is to be human. The fact that he manages to hold his own against a machine more advanced than him makes him one epic badass.

Number 2 - Batman

Batman is, first and foremost, a detective. But when forensics and clues fail he turns to beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. Apparently Batman is also an expert in multiple forms of martial arts having studied for years as Bruce Wayne before assuming his bat persona. When hand-to-hand combat fails Batman turns to his gadgets using an arsenal consisting of ancient weaponry like smoke bombs that a ninja might use and high-tech body armor, vehicles and spy equipment. Batman exists in the DC Universe where most super-heroes have super-powers and yet manages to hold his own in a fight, that alone would make him a badass.

Number 1 - Wolverine

Wolverine has been plagued by having one of the worst origin movies ever made but despite this I couldn't ignore how awesome the character actually is. James Howlett (Wolverine) has mutant powers including increased strength, agility, sense of smell, and super fast healing. He also possesses six one foot long bone claws which protrude from his knuckles allowing him to both slice and impale enemies easily. He was part of a top secret program called weapon X that grafted an indestructible metal called adamantium to his bones AND claws. Wolverine is all but immortal being already more than a century old and still appearing as if he is in his thirties or forties. He is definitely the most badass members of the X-Men due to his feral unpredictable nature, claws, and badass set of super-powers in general. Let's hope the next Wolverine does justice to the true ferocity and awesomeness of the character.

So that's it, my top 10 badass heroes list. Here are the badasses who didn't make the list:

King Leonidus
James Bond
Maximus (main character from Gladitor)
Liu Kang
Rocky Balboa
Every Bruce Lee Character Ever
Aragorn
Morpheus or Neo
Spider-Man

Top Ten Movies

Top 10 (Favorite) Movies

The following are the ten movies that I like best. Please note that in no way am I claiming these are the best ever made. Instead I am merely saying that these are my ten favorite films and attempting to justify that opinion. You may agree or disagree and I would love to hear your reasoning as to why to agree or disagree or even what ten movies would inhabit your own list and why.

Number 10 - KING KONG (1933)

King Kong is a fairly simple story but it marks one of the first, and arguably still one of the best, monster movies ever created. Using stop-motion and giant puppets King Kong uses practical effects that were impressive for its day and weren't surpassed until the advent of CGI in the late 20th Century. The fact that such great special effects were implemented before WW2 seems utterly incredible to me.

The story is simple, yet fairly deep. The story is a metaphor of sorts. The barbaric animalistic Kong covets Ms. Ann Darrow and carries her away. I believe this is a statement about the animal within us all, the ape within, and our fear of where we came from or fear of the unknown, the darkness of the jungle.

I also feel that King Kong is more tragic hero than monster in the film. While he does kidnap Ann he does so only because she is offered as a sacrifice and she is beautiful. He spends the remainder of the film attempting to defend her as any man would defend his woman. King Kong battles badass dinosaurs and combats those who seek to take Ann away from him and in the end we are offered one of cinema's most enduring lines. It was beauty that killed the beast...

Number 9 - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Star Wars has always held a special place for me. As a kid growing up I could quote the original Trilogy by heart. There is something very alluring about the story. Lucas and his fellow filmmakers created a movie that mixed medieval magic with futuristic cities and a Father Son struggle that is pure archetype. It is this struggle between Father and Son, both physical and emotional, that makes Empire one of the best sequels ever made and one of my Top Ten favorite films.

Empire Strikes Back continued Star Wars' legacy of fantastic special effects, solid plot and compelling characters. It carried the saga to dark places with all the characters facing peril at one point or another and death just a misstep away at all times. Empire is a triumph of filmmaking and has kept the sci-fi nerd in me very happy.

Number 8 - The Dark Knight (2008)

When Chris Nolan took over the Batman franchise I had no idea who he was but Batman Begins had served as a solid origin story to a character I grew up loving. The Dark Knight, however, took that to a whole new level.

Heath Ledger - When I heard he was going to be the Joker I was flabbergasted. After all one of the "gay" guys from Brokeback Mountain hardly seems an obvious choice for a sadistic psychopathic arch nemesis. His performance turned out to be the best Joker ever. It helped, a great deal, that he was given some of the best dialogue I've ever heard from a villain. Joker truly is a rogue element in Gotham, he doesn't seem to desire anything and he considers society a joke. He's an anarchist and complete lunatic and he acts accordingly. Undoubtedly the Joker stole the show and upstaged Christian Bale by a mile.

Nolan delivered the best batman film to date with The Dark Knight and while not flawless the film is definitely one of my favorites.

Number 7 - Planet of the Apes (1968)

Planet of the Apes has been a favorite of mine for years. It is a sci-fi lovers dream. Worked on by the likes of Rod Serling (Twilight Zone) The Planet of the Apes tells the story of what happens when a ship flying near the speed of light crash lands on a strange planet. As most of you hopefully know if the ship is moving near the speed of light time moves much slower for it than for those back on Earth.

The film features some of the best make-up work ever done and presents certain social dilemmas, such as the Science Vs. Religion issue, flawlessly. Ape society is much like ours used to be, science is a religious institution and religion is in bed with all levels of government. Those that seek to learn the "forbidden" truths that lie in the Forbidden Zone are looked down upon. Those that question the state religion, even if they have facts to back them up, are in deep trouble.

Planet of the Apes also has one of the best twist endings and while modern moviegoers will have no trouble seeing it coming (if they don't already know it) it still makes for one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. This scene serves as a warning of what might happen if we lose our grip on sanity and destroy ourselves.

Number 6 - 12 Angry Men (1957)

It might seem odd for a male in his early twenties to appreciate so old a film but 12 Angry Men has been a staple of my cinema diet since I was twelve. In fact I've probably seen this movie more times than any other movie on the list and I watch it every time I get the chance.

The story is simple but expertly told. 12 jurors must decide whether a man is innocent or guilty of murder. When they go in eleven of the men are voting guilty and one is voting not guilty. One by one, using logic and the evidence of the case itself, this one man, played by Henry Fonda, manages to convince the others that sending the defendant to his death, or to life in prison, is not worth it. The film touches upon prejudice, impatience, and other themes and helps illustrate the way the United States Justice System is meant to operate.

Number 5 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Terminator 2 is the sequel to James Cameron's first Terminator film which, while also a big favorite of mine, did not make the top ten. Terminator 2 takes the things that made the first film great and multiplies them. The special effects here are fantastic and this is one of the first films to take full advantage of CGI effects.

The story here is sci-fi perfection. A Machine disguised as a human is sent back in time to exterminate humanity's savior, John Connor. This film helped cement the already popular Arnold Schwarzenegger as a staple of action films and switched him from villain (like he was in the Terminator) to hero. He delivers one of his best and funniest performances playing a machine that isn't meant to have emotion.

Number 4 - Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day is about one of those hypothetical philosophical situations that most of us have been asked about. What if you were stuck reliving the same day? This film explores many of the implications of just such an event and it does so with both humor and heart.

Bill Murray plays a self-centered sarcastic douche who is sent in, reluctantly, to cover the famed Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA. He gets himself stuck in an endless loop of Groundhog Days. Hilarity ensues. He attempts to kill himself, he attempts to seduce his co-worker and, in the end, learns a lesson about selflessness and bettering oneself. Bill Murray rules.

Number 3 - Inception (2010)

I'd rather not spoil anything for you since I know there are still people out there who haven't seen this one. Basically technology is developed that allows people to share dreams with one another. This leads to high-tech espionage where people attempt to infiltrate other people's dreams and steal information. Far harder than stealing ideas is implanting them... or inception.

This is the second film by Chris Nolan to be on the list and I feel it is his best film to date. The movie is both action packed, visually impressive and boasts a philosophically robust plot.

Number 2 - Star Wars (1977)

I think I've said plenty already about how much I love Star Wars. In 1977 George Lucas seemed to come out of nowhere. He delivered one of the best films ever made and revitalized and inspired both the science fiction and fantasy genres.

Number 1 - Aliens (1986)

Aliens is the sequel to Ridley Scott's excellent film, Alien (1979). Set more than five decades after the events of Alien James Cameron's sequel takes the film from gothic sci-fi horror to the realm of sci-fi action. The sequel introduces a team of Space Marines, mercenaries sent by the company, Weyland-Yutani, to investigate a rash of disappearances on the colony LV-426.

Aliens has one of the strongest female characters in cinematic history in Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) who helps the Space Marines in their struggle to survive. Aliens also showcases some of the best practical effects ever produced including the legendary Alien queen which looks better than any CGI I've ever seen to this day.

With good writing, memorable characters, solid acting and special effects that stand the test of time Aliens is undoubtedly number one in my Top 10 Films list. Thank you for reading and remember to stay frosty.

For those interested the next 10 movies (if I were to have a top 20) would be as follows:

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Matrix
The Terminator
Back to the Future
The Thing
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Shaun of the Dead
Children of Men
ALIEN
Ghost Busters
